Port Colborne doctor to head McMaster’s Niagara campus
Port Colborne family physician Dr. Amanda Bell has been appointed regional assistant dean at the Niagara campus of McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.
Bell, a McMaster graduate, starts her new job July 1, taking over the role from Dr. Karl Stobbe, who helped established the Niagara campus in 2007.
In addition to caring for patients at her Charlotte Street Port Colborne office, Bell has worked an associate clinical professor of family medicine for the medical school.
Bell joined McMaster University’s faculty in 2002 after completing her residency in Ottawa, and has since been thoroughly involved in medical education, primarily in Niagara.
Currently director of student affairs in Niagara and chair of the student affairs for McMaster’s undergraduate medical program, Bell has also taught undergradu- ate students and family medicine residents, developed curriculum such as the Mac Essentials tutor training program, and worked as an undergraduate and family medicine residency examiner throughout her career.
McMaster’s associate dean of health professional education Dr. Alan Neville described Bell as someone with “a background in the Niagara region and our campus, as well as a strong enthusiasm for medical education.”
Bell, who has also led Port Colborne’s physician recruitment and retention committee, has been involved in Niagara Health System’s clinical education and physician recruitment initiatives, and has presented research nationally, particularly on student mistreatment and unprofessional behaviour in the workplace.
