Ambitious downtown repaving set to begin

A “very ambitious program” of repaving several downtown Peterborough streets is about to begin this month, says Mayor Jeff Leal, replacing the bumpy ride with smooth new surfaces.

Leal said in an interview he’s pleased the city is finally repaving George and Water streets, among others.

He said both George and Water have been in poor condition “for a decade plus, now.”

“Both main streets in downtown Peterborough are an embarrassment to us all. So we’re finally getting it done,” he said in an interview Monday.

The city has budgeted $2.3 million for the repaving in 2024.

However, motorists ought to prepare for detours to occur from time to time for more than a year.

In a news release, the city states it has hired IPAC Paving Limited of Richmond Hill to start repaving this month and be done by fall 2025.

“We recognize that it will present a bit of an inconvenience, for a period of time,” Leal said. “But we want to get this work completed.”

Milling and repaving of segments of George and Water streets will be done during evening and overnight hours, the city advises in its release.

People will still have access to businesses and to sidewalks during construction, the release adds.

Citizens who own properties or operate businesses along the streets that are being repaved can expect traffic disruption to last between four and six days, the release states, barring any poor weather or other issues.
