- LANCE ANDERSON PETERBOROUGH THIS WEEK

Peterborough folk can rejoice with the return of a popular music festival this weekend.

The 29th annual Peterborough Folk Festival runs from Friday through Sunday and will feature an eclectic mix of performers, says Ryan Kemp, the festival's artistic director and vice-chairman.

He adds the festival is familyfriendly and will also feature several local performers.

An impressive lineup of musicians has been scheduled starting with a kickoff concert on Friday with Juno-nominated artist Terra Lightfoot. The last time Lightfoot was in Peterborough she opened for Bruce Cockburn.

Opening for Lightfoot is the Folk Festival’s 2018 Emerging Artist, local musician Hillary Dumoulin.

The concert is being held at Market Hall starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 and are available at www.markethall.org

The festival will shift to Nicholls Oval on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. with many groups set to perform including Saturday night headliners Bedouin Soundclash. The Juno-award winners are best known for their hit song 'When The Night Feels My Song.' The Peterborough Folk Festival is one of six shows the band is performing in this summer after a seven-year hiatus.

Local legends The Spades are set to perform. They are returning to the stage for the first time in six years with a performance on Saturday at 8 p.m.

The band has toured across Canada several times with Matthew Good, and Matt Barber. They also opened for The Tragically Hip five times.

On Sunday at 1:30 p.m., fivetime Juno-nominated children's entertainers Splash N Boots will be on the stage at Nicholls Oval followed by a limited meet and greet after the show. Splash N Boots star in their own Treehouse TV show.

Other Sunday highlights include performances by Logan Staats, winner of The Launch Canada television show, and My Son The Hurricane.

Several local musicians are scheduled to play throughout the weekend including Melissa Payne, Kate Suhr, Mary-Kate Edwards, The Silver Hearts, Broken Harmony and Tequila Jay & Los Diablos.

In addition to the music, more than 40 artists and craft vendors will be set up in the park along with a children's area which will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Kemp encourages people to come out and enjoy the festival which is completely put on by volunteers.

The budget, he adds, comes from the city, organizations, beer sales in the designated beer garden and donations from the public.
