Marshall’s doubled up on the Terry’s Gas and Variety/Ricarts Slayers 6-3 on Thursday night at the George (Red) Sullivan East City Bowl to win the Peterborough Men’s Softball Association city men’s league championship.
Marshall’s, who also won the Taylor Trophy last season, took the best-of-seven series 4-1.
Clayton Robinson was the winning pticher.
Steve MacNaughton took the loss.
The Slayers took a 1-0 lead in the third on a solo home run by Cody Skelton.
The made it 2-0 in the fourth when a Steve MacNaughton RBI cashed in Dan Burnham who had doubled.
Marshall’s tied it up in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homer by Greg Young.
Marshall’s took a 6-2 lead in the fifth on a two-RBI double by Greg Watts, an RBI double by Michael Loucks and an RBI single by Jake Cutting.
An RBI single by Garry Manley in the seventh made the final score 6-3.
It’s the 97th season for the league, considered the oldest softball league still running in Ontario. It's all part of a busy weekend for Excalibur athletes. Trent's men's and women's soccer hit the road for a weekend full of games in Kingston. On Saturday both teams face RMC at Navy Bay. On Sunday, Queen's hosts at Richardson Stadium. Men's lacrosse heads to Montreal and Ottawa as they face off against McGill on Saturday trying to avenge the first loss last weekend. On Sunday, they meet the University of Ottawa. Women's lacrosse looks to keep their undefeated status going as they head to UOIT on Sunday to play York and Queen's at Vaso's Field. Women's rugby hosts the University of Toronto Varsity Blues for their home opener Saturday at Justin Chiu Stadium. After their win against Brock last weekend, the team is looking to start a streak. Kick-off is at 4 p.m. Men's rugby travel to Waterloo Saturday to face Laurier.
