A video posted by a Niagara-onthe-Lake councillor on social media of a recent collision in Virgil has prompted Niagara Region to take action on safety measures at the intersection where it occurred.

Coun. Paolo Miele posted a 20-minute live video he shot with commentary on his Facebook page of the aftermath of a collision at Line 3 and Four Mile Creek Road on April 12.

“We need the chief of police to work hand in hand with senior staff at the Region and our senior staff here in Niagara-onthe-Lake,” Miele said in his video.

“I hate doing this and showing you (the collision, but) they’re not listening to us.”

He said the Region has done studies on the intersection, but has concluded there isn’t enough traffic to warrant control measures.

Miele said there have been 29 collisions over the past five years, not including the one on April 12 and another one last week.

At town council Monday, Miele said there have been more than 2,000 views of his video and he has received calls from Niagara Regional Police and the regional senior staff.

“Social media can be used for good,” he said, noting the Region is prepared to install a four-way stop at the intersection with rumble strips on Line 3 “based on the frequency and seriousness of accidents.”

Coun. Jim Collard said the corner is dangerous and the town has been asking the Region for years for traffic controls at Line 3 and Four Mile Creek Road.

A motion was passed that Niagara Region take immediate steps to increase the safety of the intersection.

Miele said he would also like to see the speed limit lowered in the area and traffic lights installed at the intersection.
