Varsity Spears trample Stampeders

Six different players scored touchdowns as the Niagara Varsity Spears defeated the Burlington Stampeders 50-7 in the Ontario Provincial Football League action recently.

Josh Ferguson led the way with two rushing touchdowns as the Spears built a 36-0 lead in the first half at Kiwanis Field in St. Catharines.

The Varsity Spears took the opening kickoff to midfield before Ferguson completed the drive with a one-yard touchdown.

The Spears defence kept the Stampeders from gaining any momentum and forced them to punt. Angel Pjepi scored on a quarterbac­k sneak with Hayden Riley connecting on both points after for a 14-0 lead.

The defensive front of Drew Pouliot, Daylon Morales, Sandor Mod, Jack Andrews, Teddy Mansell, Jack Scardino and kept the Stampeders running game bottled up and effort to go to a passing game were shutdown by defenders Jake Porter, Jake Andrews, Reid Wiley and Carmine Spedaliere.

Travis Arp connected with Daniel Serravalle for a 25-yard pass and catch for a Spears touchdown before Ferguson ended a drive with a 22-yard TD run.

Hayden Riley connected on the point after and on the kickoff then booted the ball through the endzone on the ensuing kickoff. Chase Bowden rounded up the Varsity Spears first half scoring with a 20-rushing touchdown. Hayden Riley connected on the point after giving the Spears a 36-0 lead.

In the second half, the Stampeders caught the Varsity Spears in mix up on a coverage and scored a 36-yard TD pass and catch.

The Spears offence answered with a wide receiver screen to Rico Charbonnea­u for a 75-yard touchdown for a 43-7 lead.

Spedaliere rounded out the scoring with a 26-yard intercepti­on return for a touchdown.
