A library card is a passport to your potential! And a reminder that Sunday hours return this weekend, and starting Sept. 9 the New Glasgow Library will be open from 2 to 5 p.m.
Coming up this week
This fall, the Pictou Library is continuing with the weekly Sensory Storytimes (for children ages three to nine) on Wednesdays at 2 p.m. Sensory Storytimes are designed as inclusive programs that feature stories, songs, rhymes and sensory activities for all children, with an emphasis on supportive activities for children who may have sensory processing challenges, Autism or difficulty sitting for long periods of time. Space is limited, so please contact the Pictou Library to preregister: 902485-5021.
The program development at the library was supported through a grant provided by our local Community Health Boards’ Wellness Funds.
The changing season also brings the return of our everpopular Community Café at the Westville Library. This month, we welcome Debbie Greene from Atlantic Fabrics, who will share how to make a Candle Mat and how to decorate for autumn. All are welcome, and to sweeten the pot we serve tea, coffee and light snacks, too. Community Café this month will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 2:30 p.m. (and starting in October, it will return to the regularly scheduled first Wednesday afternoon of the month). For more interesting conversation, and insight on a very timely topic, all are welcome to join us at the deCoste Performing Arts Centre in Pictou, for a special author reading and presentation by Dr. Jock Murray, Notable Goals, Dedicated Doctors: the story of the Dalhousie Medical School, on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. The event is free and Coles New Glasgow will be on hand with copies of Dr. Murray’s new book for purchasing. Dr. Murray is a professor emeritus and former Dean of the Dal Med School, and is one the featured authors at this year’s Word on the Street Literary Festival in Halifax on Saturday, Sept. 15.
And to round out the week, it will be a Dalhlicous Dress Up Day on Thursday, Sept. 13, at the Pictou Library, as we celebrate Roald Dahl’s Birthday all day long. Drop by, make a party hat, colour the BFG, make a “human bean” button, pin the newt on Miss Trunchbull, enjoy some Frobscottle and miniature snacks, sure to make you feel like a giant! And you’re welcome to join the fun and dress up as your favourite Dahl book character, too! The Pictou Library is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursdays.
