- MARITIME JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE

The YMCA tripled its goal with the first Spin-a-thon that was held at the YMCA last Saturday. More than 100 people in 16 teams participated in the first YMCA Spin-a-thon which exceed expectations. The initial goal was $6,000, however, at the end of the day $18,500 was taken in for the Strong Kids Campaign.

The YMCA Strong Kids Campaign that assists with youth programming and membership assistance at the YMCA.

“It was exciting to see one of our free youth programs taking place in the gym, while right above it, in the studio room, many were raising funds for that program and many other programs at the Y,” said Dave MacIntrye, CEO, YMCA of Pictou County. “We want to say thank you to those who participated and supported this event. It will allow the YMCA to carry out programs that help to make our community healthier.”

The 12-hour event was a success. It was an event that saw all skill levels from never being on a spin bike to using it as a training session for Triathlon or an Iron Man. Teams of up to six people spun. It gave instructors the opportunity to showcase their classes and style of teaching.

Participants raised funds through pledges.

“We had a huge turnout for the first event. Gene Mills, 94.1 Wake Up show, even DJ’d the last few hours of the event,” said Laura Leahy, Health and Fitness Director, YMCA. “We are appreciative of the support from the community. We really want to say ‘thank you’ to everyone. It was an all-around fun and vibrant day.”

Jiggy’s Dream Team was the top fundraising team contributing more than $4,000 to the total. The YMCA staff say they are already looking forward to next year’s event.
