Lions swept the Markham Revolution to win gold medals
The 13U boys’ squad of the Ancaster Lions Volleyball Club swept the Markham Revolution to win Ontario Volleyball Association gold medals last week.
The 13U Lions went 6-0 over two days of Division 1 pool play matches, going 12-2 in sets and outscoring their opponents 324232. On April 24, the third day of the Ontario Championships, the Lions dropped an early-morning playoff challenge to the London Spiking Sharks, sending the Ancaster team to the Tier 2 playoffs. They swept the Cambridge Scorpions 25-12, 25-20 in the quarter-final before edging Forest City 25-22, 23-25, 15-8 in the semi.
In the gold medal match, the Lions and the Markham Revolution traded point for point, but Ancaster’s attacking was too much for the Revolution, with the Lions prevailing 25-23, 25-19.
The boys’ success was part of a banner year for the Lions at the Ontario Championships. The 16U
girls earned Tier 2 silver in Division 3 on April 29; the 15U girls won Division 4, Tier 1 silver on April 8; and the 14U Lions Black earned Division 4, Tier 2 gold on
April 8. The 12U girls narrowly missed out on Division 2, Tier 2 bronze, dropping the third set of the medal game 15-13 to the North Bay Lakers.
