A woman who repeatedly stole from grocery stores and other retailers in Charlottetown was sentenced recently to 280 days in jail on 11 charges.

Bethany Lynn Trainor, 23, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown for sentencing on five theft charges, two counts of failing to attend court and two probation breaches.

Trainor was also sentenced on two counts of abetting someone in breaching an undertaking.

Crown attorney Jeff MacDonald stayed two more theft charges but read the facts from those offences into the record.

The court heard Trainor stole a combined total of about $650 from both Superstores in Charlottetown over a span of several months.

She also stole work boots from Mark’s Work Wearhouse on two separate occasions and another pair of boots from Wright’s and Redshoes in Charlottetown.

During some of the thefts, a person who was not supposed to have any contact with Trainor was with her.

That led to the two charges of abetting him in breaching an undertaking.

Defence lawyer Yolande Murphy told the court Trainor had serious addictions issues and was on methadone, but continued to struggle.

Trainor wants to be a positive person in the community and is ready to put her old self in the past, Murphy said.

“She would like to be a better person.”

Before sentencing Trainor, Orr said she had an extremely lengthy and directly related record.

Trainor cried as she listened to Orr who told her if she wanted to make changes she had the benefit of being young enough to do that.

Orr said hopefully Trainor will take her time in custody to get herself straight.

Trainor was in custody before sentencing, and Orr reduced the time left to serve by 15 days.

Along with the jail time, Trainor will be on probation for three years, during which time she is banned from all the stores she stole from.

Trainor must write apology letters to the managers of those stores and must pay a total of $1,270.86 in restitution.
