Island Gymnastics Academy shines at provincial­s

Summerside Saultos host recent provincial championsh­ips in new facility

The Island Gymnastics Academy (IGA) earned 21 titles to lead the pack at the recent P.E.I. provincial gymnastics championsh­ips in Summerside.

The Summerside Saultos gymnastics club played host for four Island clubs in its new facility.

The gymnasts competed for titles and roster spots on the P.E.I. Atlantic and Eastern Canadian teams.

On the female side, top performers Victoria Covey (JO level six argo), Katie Gaudet (JO level six novice), Solen Trainor (JO level four argo), Maggie Campbell (JO level six tyro) and RaeLee MacDonald (JO level seven novice) all had wins for IGA, which counted 12 titles.

The Victory Gymnastics Centre also saw strong performanc­es with three all-around first-place finishes for Tanisha Tawil (JO level seven open), Kenzie Myers (JO level eight tyro) and Mairi MacPhail (interclub tyro).

The Saultos took home three first-place finishes with gold medals for Alyssa Mugridge (JO level eight open), Ashley MacDougall (JO level eight novice) and Lindsay Stewart (interclub novice).

St Louis Gymnos also had a provincial champion in Ava Rennie (interclub argo).

For the male athletes, IGA claimed nine all-around titles including Alex Mann (national open), Kip Morris (provincial one under-12), Ethan Arsenault (provincial four under-13) and Simon Burns (provincial four 13-plus).

Next for many of the athletes who made the Team P.E.I. roster is the Atlantic championsh­ips this weekend in Sackville, N.B., followed by the Eastern Canadian and national gymnastics championsh­ips next month.
