Good escape plan won Isaac an iPad

- By BARB AGUIAR

Friday wasn’t a routine school day for seven-year old Isaac Quadri.

The Grade 2 George Pringle Elementary School student was the winner in West Kelowna Fire Rescue’s Fire Prevention Week draw for an iPad.

He was surprised when West Kelowna Fire Rescue came to his classroom Friday morning to present him with his prize.

After the presentation, a grinning Quadri and his classmates were allowed to go out to the school parking lot and check out the fire truck.

To qualify to enter the draw, Quadri discussed his home escape plan and meeting place with his family, tested his smoke alarms and made sure they were under 10 years old.

The is the third year West Kelowna Fire Rescue has held the draw for the iPad, which is supplied by the West Kelowna Paid On Call Firefighters Association.

It works as an incentive to get kids to talk to their parents and other family members about what they would do if there was a fire in their house and how to get out safely.

“In a fire, you just don’t have a lot of time to get out so practicing what you’re going to do ahead of time will just insure that you’re out faster and safer,” said Kelly Wilson, fire and life safety instructor.

She said designating a meeting place means family members won’t worry about each others’ whereabouts.

The draw was a good reminder for the family, said Isaac’s mom, Michelle. They planned and practised their escape route and reminded everybody about their meeting place.
