- STEVEN MAH SOUTHWEST BOOSTER

The Swift Current Wildcats moved into top spot in the SFMAAAHL with a perfect three win weekend.

The Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats won three league games in as many days to climb atop the standings in the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League.

The Wildcats swept the two-time defending league champion Saskatoon Stars to open the weekend.

Friday, the Wildcats got 20 saves from Cheyenne Jamieson and won the special teams battle decisively in a 4-0 win over the visiting Stars.

The Wildcats finished three-for-eight on the power play and killed off nine shorthanded situations as Jamieson earned the shutout in her Wildcats regular season debut.

Sara Kendall led the Wildcats with two goals and one assist, while Ryleigh White and Baylee Kirwan added a goal and an assist each. Crystal Wale, Maddy Mccleary, and Brooklyn Rublee all added assists.

Saturday, the Wildcats fired 31 shots on net in a 3-1 win over the Stars. Amaya Giraudier improved to 2-0 with 17 saves.

Mccleary, Samantha Thompson, and Brooklyn Rublee all scored. Kendall and Ashlee Wolfe each assisted on two goals, while Rublee and Kenedee Klevgaard added single helpers.

Reuna Blight scored the lone goal for the Stars, who got 28 saves from Kaitlyn Cadrain.

“Yeah it feels really good,” said Kendall. “It’s been awhile since we’ve beat them and they’ve got swept in a weekend actually. It feels really good.”

The Wildcats capped the weekend with a 4-3 shootout win over the visiting Regina Rebels on Sunday.

Jamieson made 29 saves and then stopped a pair of Rebels in the shootout, while Kendall and Wolfe both scored in the shootout to lift the Wildcats to their third win in as many days.

“It’s awesome,” said Kendall, who led the Wildcats with two goals and one assist. “It’s for sure been a long weekend, but we did all the right things. We did have a couple bad spells, but we found a way to gut it out, especially in our third game.”

Kirwan added a goal and an assist, while Brooklyn Rublee chipped in two assists as the Wildcats improved to 3-0-1-0. Kamryn Johnson and Klevgaard picked up single helpers.

The Wildcats allowed late goals in the second and third periods, but persevered to get the extra point.

“Well we came out the next period even stronger than we did before, which is a really good thing. We didn’t give up or let them get back in the game. We just tried to get momentum again and we did it, we gutted it out,” said Kendall.

Kendall now has 10 points in four games to lead the SFMAAAHL in scoring.

“I’m just trying to work my hardest and hopefully if I do that then everyone else will. Everyone else is obviously showing that they can play this and they can step up and everyone is just falling into their roles and its making everyone do better.”

The Wildcats will return to league action on October 20 when they host the Saskatoon Stars again at 12:30 p.m. at Fairview Arena.
