Workshop aims to share tips to nurture mindful children

-

Dr. Sheila Scott, professor in music education at Brandon University, is presenting a mindfulness workshop for parents, teachers and other caregivers of children ages three to eight. This workshop will take place in Swift Current at Yoga Connexion, 2149 Walker Street, Thursday, October 10, 6:45 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The concept of mindfulness is of growing interest to many segments of society including adults who interact with children. As presented in this workshop, mindfulness is a way of being fully present in the moment, using our senses of seeing, hearing, moving and touching to experience our immediate environment. Through mindfulness, children develop deep and thoughtful breathing to calm the body. From this sense of calm, children and their caregivers create opportunities to bring peace and kindness into their lives.

Dr. Scott, author of the book Music education for children on the autism spectrum: A resource for teachers (Oxford University Press, 2017), brings her expertise on mindfulness to Swift Current, offering parents, teachers and other caregivers a workshop of activities and materials that nurture mindfulness for children through a variety of experiences (mindful breathing, mindful listening and mindful moving). No previous knowledge or experience in mindfulness or in yoga is required to take part in this workshop. Participants need to wear comfortable clothes, bring a yoga mat if they own one, and be prepared to play. The cost is $30 per person. To register contact Amanda Schamber at Yoga Connexion (306-741-0032 or yogaconnexionsc@gmail.com). Space is limited so register early to reserve your place.
