16U Junior Sundogs earn top ranking

- SUBMITTED

The 16U Boys SunDogs volleyball team entered Provincials as the top ranked team after winning their third tournament in four outings this season at a recent event in Regina.

The SunDogs started their day with two round robin games against the Moose Jaw Element and Regina Gold.

Against Moose Jaw, Swift Current was able to win a tightly played first set 25-21. However, the SunDogs suffered a bit of a meltdown in the second set and lost 2512. The boys picked it back up in the third set of the best of three, however, and knocked off Moose Jaw to earn a win in their first game.

It was a similar story against Regina in the SunDogs’ second game. After a convincing 25-9 win in the first set, Swift Current suffered another meltdown and lost the second set 25-10. Again, the boys picked it back up in the third set and won it 15-7.

After the brief round robin, Swift Current ranked first in their pool with an overall record of 2-0.

In the semi-final, the SunDogs faced Waldheim. These two teams have played some very close matches over the course of the season, but Swift Current was able to control the game for the most part. They beat Waldheim in straight sets (25-17, 25-14).

In the final, Swift Current was again matched up against Regina Gold. The boys were able to beat Regina in straight sets (2516, 25-21) to earn a first place finish.

This was the final tuneup for the 16U SunDogs before they head to provincials in Saskatoon. The SunDogs are the top ranked team in the province heading into provincials. They won three of the four tournaments they entered this season, and finished second in the only tournament they didn’t win.
