Massey-vanier science fair was a resounding success!

- By Louise Smith

Many elementary school students were displaying their scientific acumen last Friday in the cafeteria of Masseyvanier. There were also displays from Massey-vanier students. It was great to see the respect students had for each other’s displays and the judges were impressed by how well students were able to speak about their projects.

Butler Elementary School, from Bedford, took the overall elementary school trophy for a fourth year. Their school projects had the highest average score.

A real treasure was the display from Darren Vaillancourt, a home schooled student, grade seven age, but whose scientific prowess awed all who spoke to him. Darren’s project, “The Powerplants Inside You”, had the highest score of all the projects in the fair. He was given an award for having the highest score. His project was at a university level and he was able to explain his project at the same level. He ended up in a category all by himself.

Solomon Jung, a former winner of the Massey-vanier science trophy and scholarship back in 2010, spent a lot of time talking to Darren. Solomon was the guest judge of honour. He is finishing up his CEGEP program and he will be attending Concordia next year.

The Massey-vanier trophy for 2024 went to Alicia Hebert and Jaida Eland for their project, “Dreams”.

The science fair has been coordinated for the last few years by Dawn Singfield. She gathered a wide variety of judges and put in many hours to get the fair organized. The day went very well and each project was judged three times. It was a joy to see science being supported and shared.
