Sherbrooke Record

The untold story of the unidentified cat

- By Nick Fonda

The photograph on Page 5 of Friday’s Record captured three figures. The caption identified Anne-claire Hénault and Josh Brown, but didn’t identify the third figure, a sleek, black feline.

With Luna nosing her way into the foreground of the photo, one might have expected the story to be about her. At the very least, since she was in the picture, she should have had her name mentioned.

As it is, the story in Friday’s paper noted that Anne-claire is a former snowboarding instructor now studying Film and Sociology at Bishop’s University and that her husband, Josh Brown, is a Britishborn musician and composer who is adapting to life in French-speaking

Sherbrooke while earning his living by writing musical scores for documentary films being produced in his home city of Bristol.

There was no mention of Luna in the story, despite her presence in the photo. This was unfortunate because Luna has a story of her own.

Josh tells it briefly, “She’s a rescue. She arrived at our back door three years ago on Valentine’s Day. It was dark and minus 20 out. I heard meowing. I opened the door and she shot in, ran around the apartment, and never left. She was still a kitten. When Anne got home, she thought I’d bought her a pet for Valentine’s Day. In fact, it was Luna who got us for Valentine’s Day.”

If only Luna could speak. How did she end up outside when it was 20 below zero? How many doors did she go to before going to Josh’s door? Or did some sixth sense lead her to pick his door in particular?

But like all felines, Luna doesn’t speak—a case, perhaps, of the cat getting her tongue?

However harrowing some of the moments she may have lived through, Luna’s story, three years along, is continuing happily ever after.

It is said that dogs have masters and that cats have staff.

Luna, as is evident in the photo, is quite satisfied. She seems to be reflecting that, in times like these when good help is so hard to find, she really did quite well in selecting her staff.
