Two empty Richmond schools finally up for sale

- Record Staff

After several months of anticipation, the Des Sommets School Board has finally obtained the Quebec Ministry of Education and Higher Education authorization to sell two schools that have been unoccupied for several years.

"We heard the news with great pleasure," said newly elected Richmond mayor, Bertrand Ménard. "It must be said that the former municipal council had gone out of its way and held many meetings with the school board and the ministry to get the two schools put up for sale," said Ménard. The City now hopes that the public bidding process, which will be carried out by the Société québécoise des infrastructures on behalf of the school board, will be launched quickly and that the bids submitted will meet expectations so that we can get to the stage of the much-needed revitalization of this sector of the city.”

In recent years, the city council and the industrial commissioner spared no effort to make the school board of the importance of the sale of the two schools, which have been vacant for more than fifteen years and which require significant annual maintenance fees. The city had even submitted an offer of purchase to the board in order to carry out a business project in collaboration with the Université de Sherbrooke that was rejected.

It will take a few more months before the sale of properties materialize, enough so that purchase offers can be received and analyzed, and ultimately endorsed.
