Featured pet: Mandy and Ella

-

Today we'd like to introduce Mandy and Ella. While they do not share a common history, both are shining examples of just how resilient dogs can be.

Mandy is a beautiful Great Dane mix. Although we know very little about her past, it is clear she has had multiple litters. Underweight and with a sagging belly, it is our guess that Mandy is a cast off from a backyard breeder. It is very likely she recently gave birth.

When she first arrived, Mandy was reserved and quite timid but in the short time she's been with us, she has blossomed into a much more secure and outgoing dog. She eagerly anticipates her morning walk and loves when it's her turn to run and play in our dog park. It must feel good to stretch those long legs of hers. Being slightly underweight and with such short fur, Mandy has little natural protection from the cold but she looks smashing in her new winter sweater and wears it proudly.

At approximately five, Mandy still has lots of spark and energy. She is good on the leash and interacts nicely with other dogs. Despite being 10 times their size, she is a little fearful of cats but the more time she spends in our cat room, the more at ease she is around them.

Although a shelter is not a home, Mandy seems content and she definitely likes the attention she is getting. We know that once adopted, Mandy will indulge fully in being a pampered pet. She is sweet and friendly and is a real people pleaser.

Although she can still be a little timid when first meeting new people, once she is familliar she likes to stay close so a home where she is not left alone for long periods on a regular basis is ideal. Mandy takes her treats gently and is very docile and quiet when indoors in her kennel.

Ella, who is a 3-4 year old Newfoundland mix, so also a big girl, spent the first years of her life chained outdoors. Despite being deprived of the human companionship dogs so desire, her spirit and love for people remain intact. When first meeting Ella, you may notice she is a little shy but she wants to be your friend and warms up quickly. Ella enjoys her walks and is quite good on the leash. She seems to appreciate her new lease on life and has a noticeable spring in her step.

Engaged and affectionate, Ella tends to lean in against you when being pet or brushed; it's almost like she can't get close enough. In her former home, Ella was, at best, an afterthought and regularly went without a meal so she does have some tendency to protect her food, mostly from other dogs but because of this, we feel it is best that she is placed in a home without children. Ella is well behaved overall and has a really nice way about her. She has learned to sit and gently takes her treats. She'll be a great companion.

Ella often accompanies Mandy on her walks and she seems relaxed with other dogs but because of her food guarding, she may do best as the only dog. Unfortunately Ella cannot live with cats.

Ella is definitely looking forward to spending her first winter as an indoor dog. As much as she enjoys romping around and playing in the snow, when playtime is over, she loves to snuggle up in a cozy bed.
