Huskies soccer teams set to host playoff games
A pair of wins on the weekend — 6-3 against the University of Manitoba and 3-1 against the University of Winnipeg — to end the Canada West regular season was enough to propel the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s soccer team (7-3-4) to a secondplace finish in the Prairie Division and into the position of hosting the opening round of playoffs.
The UBC Thunderbirds, who finished third in the Pacific Division, will take on the Manitoba Bisons, who finished sixth in the Prairie Division, for the play-in game this Friday in Saskatoon. Saskatchewan will face the winner in the quarter-final round on Sunday.
In men’s soccer action, the Huskies had a bye while the rest of Canada West finished off the regular season. At the end of it all Saskatchewan (7-5-2) finished second in the Prairie Division and will host the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack in a quarterfinal game on Friday.
HOCKEY
Hosting the Bisons, the Huskie women (3-2-0-1) won 1-0 on Friday with goaltender Chloe Marshall earning her first shutout of the season. Saturday saw Manitoba win 3-2 after they scored a power-play goal with 4:27 left to play in the game.
On the road against Manitoba, the Saskatchewan men’s team (50-1-0-0) opened their weekend with a 4-3 overtime loss on Friday, but came back strong on Saturday to win 6-0.
VOLLEYBALL
The Huskies teams opened the Canada West regular season in front of a hometown crowd on the weekend with both teams taking on the Trinity Western University Spartans.
On Friday, the women’s team lost a close match 3-2, but it didn’t deter them as on Saturday they earned their first win of the season 3-0.
The men’s team meanwhile, lost their Friday and Saturday matches both by a score of 3-0.
