Sask. at Parapan Am Games
Regina’s Nik Goncin is leading the way for the Canadian men’s wheelchair basketball team as it gears up for the playoff round at the Parapan Am Games in Toronto. Goncin recorded a gamehigh 18 points and 12 rebounds Tuesday in a 68-62 win over Argentina, helping Canada finish first in Pool B with a 3-0 record and advance to Wednesday’s quarter-finals.
The semifinal round goes Friday, followed by the medal games on Saturday. Goncin tied a Canadian record on Monday by hitting four three-pointers in a 74-55 win over Mexico. He led all scorers in that game with 26 points.
In other Saskatchewan results at the Parapan Am Games: Prince Albert’s Erica Gavel had four points and three rebounds on Tuesday, helping the Canadian women’s wheelchair basketball team beat Brazil 82- 51. Canada (3-0) finished first in Pool B and is slated to meet Argentina in one of Thursday’s semifinals.
Rosthern’s Dave Marchand had nine kills for the Canadian men’s sitting volleyball team on Tuesday in a 3-0 sweep of Mexico (25-14, 25-16, 25-17). Canada concludes the preliminary round on Wednesday, with playoffs set to begin Thursday.
Saskatoon’s Becky Richter won her second medal of the Games on Tuesday. She claimed bronze in the women’s discus F51/ 52 with a toss of 6.26 metres. Richter won gold on Monday in the women’s club throw F31/32/51. Her toss of 16.0 metres was a Parapan Am record. Richter also just missed out on a medal Tuesday in the women’s 100m T52 when she finished fourth (31.66 seconds).
Saskatoon swimmer Samantha Ryan finished fourth Tuesday in the women’s 400m freestyle ( five minutes 7.32 seconds).
