FIVE THINGS TO WATCH IN MOCK GAME
The Saskatchewan Roughriders are to kick it up a notch at training camp Saturday with a mock game during the afternoon session at the University of Saskatchewan’s Griffiths Stadium. Considering the uncertain labour conditions in the CFL, it may be the only live football around these parts for a while. Here are five things to keep in mind regarding the mock game. Gates open at 2:30 p.m. followed by a practice at 3:15 p.m. and the mock game at 4 p.m.
RUNNING BACKS The competition for starting tailback remains wide open. Keith Toston has emerged as a physical player while blasting through or creating holes in drills. Toston may have a slight edge over Clifton Smith, Jermaine Thomas and Curtis McNeal.
LITTLE BIG MEN Running back Matt Brown (5-foot-5, 165 pounds) and receiver Ryan Smith (5-foot-7, 175 pounds) are among the smallest players on the roster. They both play with big hearts, have speed to burn and never stop working.
EYE ON THE BALL Receivers have also been involved in another heated competition. Imports Brett Swain, Chaz Schilens and Eron Riley have been impressive. Keep an eye out for non-imports Alex Pierzchalski and Kris Bastien too.
BRIAN’S IN CHARGE Brian Peters has stepped up in his second training camp. He can play middle and outside linebacker as well as safety. He’s always around the ball and is expected to be a big contributor in 2014.
LIVE IN THE MOMENT Today’s afternoon session is the largest gathering of Rider Nation since Saskatchewan won the Grey Cup on Nov. 24. Take time to relive those glorious moments and remember where you were when the Riders hoisted the Grey Cup for the fourth time in the franchise’s history.
