BEARS DEFEAT HOCKEY HUSKIES IN THREE GAMES.
Bears 5, Huskies 2
The Hockey Dogs had no defence for another quick-strike offence Sunday.
The University of Alberta Golden Bears scored a pair of goals 13 seconds apart and then another less than two minutes later to stake out an early 3-0 lead over the visiting University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
The Bears went on for a 5-2 victory in the third and deciding game of their bestof-three Canada West final at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.
No matter the outcome, both teams had already qualified for the upcoming 2013 PotashCorp University Cup national championship tournament.
Just like in Games 1 and 2, Alberta got the first power play opportunity in the opening 10 minutes. The Bears capitalized within seconds and then again 14 seconds later when Ryan Holfeld mishandled the puck.
Levko Koper tallied twice and Torrie Dyck once in the first period for Alberta, which led 3-0 and 4-0 by periods.
Kruise Reddick, with a second power-play goal, and Johnny Lazo also scored for the Bears, who were able to chase U of S starting netminder Ryan Holfeld from the net at 12:11 of the first after allowing three goals on 11 shots.
Brennan Bosch and Kenton Dulle, with late powerplay goals in the third period, replied for the Huskies, who were outshot 33-25.
Alberta went two for seven on the power play. Saskatchewan went two for four.
Huskies 5, Bears 4 (OT)
Captain Brennan Bosch was the OT hero Saturday night for the U of S Huskies, sniping the game-winner at 1:27 of extra time.
Bosch skated down the right side, stepped around the Bears’ defender and then ripped a high shot behind Alberta goalie Kurtis Mucha’s stick side, tucking a shot underneath the crossbar. Bosch had a hat trick and one assist for a four-point night.
The Dogs scored three unanswered goals to come back from a 4-2 deficit. Kenton Dulle had the tying goal with 6:28 remaining in the third. Andrew Bailey had the other goal for Saskatchewan, which was outshot 43-29.
Holfeld made 39 saves for the Huskies.
