Caragata, Gronick power Pat Canadians to playoff win

Cal Caragata and Kyren Gronick each had five points as the Regina Pat Canadians defeated the Swift Current Legionnair­es 7-1 in Saskatchew­an Midget AAA Hockey League playoff action Monday at the Co-operators Centre.

Regina leads a best-of-five quarter-final 2-1.

Caragata, the league’s most valuable player, had two goals and three assists. Gronick added one goal and four helpers. Josh Romanyk chipped in with one goal and two assists.

Alex Liskowich, Logen Hammett and Ayden Third also scored for the Pat Canadians. Riley Dekowny answered for Swift Current.

Game 4 is scheduled for Thursday, 7:30 p.m., at Fairview Arena West in Swift Current.

have signed American defensive back Zack Sanchez, who was a fifth-round pick of the Carolina Panthers in the 2016 NFL draft.

Sanchez had been on and off Carolina’s practice roster before

getting waived in May of 2018. The 26-year-old Texas native played five games with the team as a rookie in 2016, including one start. He recorded eight tackles and one pass deflection before suffering an injury.

In 2019, Sanchez played for the San Antonio Commanders of the now-defunct Alliance of American Football.

The former all-american had a decorated college career with the Oklahoma Sooners that included 134 tackles, 15 intercepti­ons and three touchdowns in 37 starts over three seasons. He was a two-time semifinali­st for the Jim Thorpe Award, given annually to the top defensive back in U.S. college football.

to a 7-5 Prairie Junior Hockey League playoff victory over the Assiniboia Southern Rebels on Monday at the Al Ritchie Memorial Centre.

Kyle Colwell had two goals and three assists for the Capitals, who assumed a 3-0 lead in a best-ofseven South semifinal.

Matt Kesslering, with two goals, Taylor Kreutzer, Cale Tuer-treble and Todd Johnson also scored for the Capitals, who trailed 3-2 after the second period.

Reese Rutko, Hunter Johnson, Tyde Hutchinson, Dawson Duff and Jordan Johnson replied for Assiniboia.

Game 4 is set for Wednesday, 7:30 p.m., at the Assiniboia Civic Centre.

In the other South semifinal, Fort Knox and the Triple Seven Chrysler Storm were tied 1-1 entering Tuesday’s Game 3 at the Fort Qu’appelle Rexentre.

Shawn Parkinson made 29 saves

for the shutout as the Melfort Mustangs posted a 2-0 Saskatchew­an Junior Hockey League victory over the visiting Flin Flon Bombers on Monday.

Tian Rask and Alex Rondeau were the goal scorers.
