Thunder to face Huskies in Prairie Football Conference semifinal

The Regina Thunder is off to the Prairie Football Conference playoffs.

The Thunder (5-3) finished third in the regular-season standings and is to visit the second-ranked Edmonton Huskies (7-1) on Sunday in one semifinal.

In the other semifinal, the firstplace Saskatoon Hilltops (7-1) will play host to the Winnipeg Rifles (4-4).

This past Saturday, the Thunder lost 35-22 in Winnipeg. Carter Shewchuk threw two touchdown passes for Regina.

Luke Hornung threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two other majors as the Miller Marauders defeated the LeBoldus Golden Suns 39-13 in Regina Intercolle­giate Football League action Friday.

Kieran Poissant had six catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns for Miller, which got two quarterbac­k sacks and one fumble recovery from Michael Clow.

The Golden Suns’ Josh Donnelly threw for 230 yards, including an 85-yard touchdown connection with Ben Camplin.

Camplin caught six passes for 146 yards for LeBoldus, which got two intercepti­ons from Matt Sali and a 105-yard kickoff-return touchdown from Ryker Frank.

Also on Friday, Matt Rivers ran for two TDs and threw for another major as the Campbell Tartans defeated the Winston Knoll Wolverines 34-20.

And Hunter Bohay rushed for 147 yards and three scores in the Riffel Royals’ 42-3 victory over the O’Neill Titans. Riley Andrews threw two touchdown passes to Ethan Ball, who had eight catches for 129 yards.

On Thursday, the Balgonie Greenall Griffins defeated the Luther Lions 38-0. Luther’s Austin Van Cryenest had three tackles, a pass deflection and a blocked fieldgoal attempt.

In Thursday’s other games, the Thom Trojans defeated the Martin Monarchs 27-15 and the Sheldon Williams Spartans defeated the Johnson Wildcats 38-12.

The University of Regina Cougars women’s softball team finished third at the Canadian Collegiate Softball Associatio­n championsh­ips.

In basketball, the Cougars won the Calgary Cup women’s tournament, while the U of R men’s team had a 1-2 record at the Concordia Classic.

The women’s hockey team split a season-opening set with the University of Saskatchew­an Huskies (3-2 win, 4-3 loss). The Huskies swept the Cougars in men’s hockey (8-2 and 6-0).

In women’s soccer, the Cougars and Huskies played to a 1-1 draw on Thursday. The Huskies won Saturday’s rematch, 1-0.
