Roughriders lock up top pick Nic Demski

-

After the CFL draft ended May 12, the Saskatchewan Roughriders said they had taken the player they really wanted with the sixth pick overall.

On Monday, they got his signature on a contract too.

Slotback Nic Demski announced in a videotaped interview on the Roughriders’ website that he was set to ink a pact with the CFL team.

“I’m officially signing with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and I’m happy to do it,” Demski says in the video, which then shows him putting pen to paper.

Terms of the contract weren’t released. Demski wasn’t available for comment.

The 21-year-old product of Winnipeg was the first receiver selected in the draft. The Roughriders wanted the 6-foot-0, 215-pounder because he adds a different dynamic to the team’s receiving corps — especially its group of Canadian receivers.

“I think he’s a playmaker and there’s no one more excited than me to have Nic Demski come to the fold,” Saskatchewan head coach Corey Chamblin was quoted as saying on the CFL.ca website.

“We need that type of explosiveness to go with some of the guys we already have.”

In 2014, Demski was named a CIS second-team All-Canadian after making 27 catches for 589 yards and five touchdowns.

He also rushed six times for 47 yards and returned 19 punts for 272 yards and a touchdown.

In the video, Demski said he has been in Regina since Wednesday and has got a good feel for the city. He’ll be on the field for rookie camp Wednesday and Thursday before main camp opens Sunday in Saskatoon.

There wasn’t any word Monday about the Roughriders’ contract negotiations with their other five draft picks — defensive linemen Rory Connop, Tyler Langlais and Brandon Tennant, running backs Matt Rea and Melvin Abankwah and defensive back Kwame Adjei — but assistant general manager Jeremy O’Day said last week that he expected all of them to be signed before camp.
