Vacant building in downtown Penticton will play host to multi-day exposition

-

Penticton Herald Staff Somewhat fittingly, a vacant building in downtown Penticton will soon play host to a multi-day exposition focused on the future of the city.

Staff at the City of Penticton have leased the former showroom of Penticton Auto Sales at 249 Westminster Ave. and will use it later this month for the next round of public consultation on the Official Community Plan update.

“The showroom in this building is perfect for workshops and meetings with the community around the Official Community Plan and can be used for other engagement activities the city is planning,” special projects manager Ben Johnson said in a press release.

Dubbed the ExpOCP, the event will run Jan. 18-20 and feature displays, hands-on activities and workshops to help participants explore a range of topics, such as the economy, transportation, arts, sustainability and housing.

“These topics surfaced through earlier engagement events as the areas of greatest opportunity for the city,” said Johnson.

“At the expo, residents will have the chance to discuss these topics in more detail and share concrete suggestions which is something people asked for at PenTALKton and other events.”

Information gathered will be used to develop draft policies on each topic, which will then be presented for more public consultation at a later date.

Those who stop by ExpOCP will be entered to win prizes, including tickets to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts and Cirque du Soleil’s upcoming ice show in Penticton.

ExpOCP will run Jan. 18, 4:307:30 p.m.; Jan 19, 9 a.m. to noon; Jan. 20, 4:30-7:30 p.m., and Jan. 20, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The current version of the OCP was created in 2002. The update, budgeted to cost $250,000, is scheduled to be complete by fall and guide the community’s growth for decades to come.
