AUGUSTA, GA. • Masters picks, sorted by category:

Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth

Spieth had his stunning collapse on the 12th hole on Sunday last year, but he won the year before. It has been six years since McIlroy fell apart on the back nine on Sunday, but like Spieth he obviously has the talent and the game to win here.

Justin Thomas, Matt Kuchar, Patrick Reed

Three Americans who have big wins on Tour, but none of the major variety.

Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood

They have been on the list of major contenders long enough to witness the emergence of a new generation of contenders. But Augusta tends to produce some enticing sentimental storylines.

Danny Willett, Adam Scott

Scott won a few years back and Willett just last year, but they come in here somewhat under the radar.

Hideki Matsuyama Matsuyama was the hottest player in the winter, winning four times between November and February.

Dustin Johnson He has three straight wins. He’s the favourite. all the trimmings, followed by apple crumble. It was pointed out to Willett that this is a rather heavy meal.

“I fully don’t expect guys to finish everything,” he said. “I’m not going to finish everything.”

Willett said it’s more about allowing the players to sample a bit of everything. Then maybe have a nap.

“(It’s a meal) like Sunday at home, you go back home and you put your feet up and watch TV and probably fall asleep.”

Willett also said he expected the Augusta chef will make the Yorkshire pudding from scratch.

“He’d best be, otherwise I’ll be in the kitchen making sure — if they go a bit flat, we’re not going to be happy.”
