Looking ahead to what’s possible

Catherine Wood says support and mentorship for employees ensures a strong company and quality service for clients. to influential people, helped me grow and mature and encouraged me. I feel privileged and grateful for the opportunities they presented.”

Wood wishes there had been more female leaders to look up to. “But that’s the reality of the era we’ve come through,” she says. “That’s why mentoring, coaching and sponsoring women in the workplace is so important to me now. At Qtrade we believe in promoting gender diversity and diversity overall.”

The latest leader to trust Wood with a challenging mandate and to serve as a role model is Qtrade chief executive officer Bill Packham. “Bill is someone I admire and respect for his insightful leadership,” Catherine says. “He’s also a true gentleman who treats everyone fairly.”

Just as others have opened doors and helped her along the way, Wood believes it is her responsibility to provide opportunities to her team members.

“To be successful you must extend trust to others, especially younger people, and give them responsibility along with the resources and information they need to succeed,” she says. “The result is a win on every level — for the organization, the employees, your clients, and for yourself.”

Women are still underrepresented in corporate leadership functions and especially in technology companies, Wood notes. “While there have been gains, there is still room for improvement.” That’s why Wood is a member of WXN, along with other professional organizations including Women’s International Forum. “I want to help foster a healthy community of women with similar experiences who are helping each other to succeed,” she says. “This kind of support was not available early in my career. That won’t be the case for my daughters.”

Wood’s advice to up-andcoming women in business? “Understand that education is more than just earning degrees to put on your résumé. You need to cultivate networks, listen to others, be curious, and be open to taking risks and following different paths,” she says. “And ladies: science and technology will be increasingly important. Keep up with emerging trends and you’ll discover opportunities to lead change and create value, whether you venture out on your own or act as an inside entrepreneur within a progressive organization.”

“I find that I need to draw on all my experiences in my role,” says Wood. “I love helping our partners navigate the changing environment and adapt their strategies to remain competitive. This is such an exciting time, and I feel like the possibilities are endless.”
