Manhunt after two killed in shooting
RCMP are searching for a suspect after two people were killed and one was injured in a shooting on the James Smith First Nation in Saskatchewan on Sunday evening.
RCMP are searching for 33-year-old Shawn Moostoos. Investigators believe he may be armed and should not be approached.
Moostoos has brown eyes, brown hair, and is just over 6 feet tall, weighing 189 pounds. Police say he has a scar on his left hand.
RCMP say three people were shot at around 7:20 p.m. on Sunday in an altercation at a residence on the First Nation. A 37-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman from James Smith were killed. A 44-year-old man was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment of what police described as serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
RCMP released none of the victims’ names.
Contacted Monday morning, Chief Wally Burns of James Smith Cree Nation said only that the band is working with the RCMP and declined any further comment.
THE SUSPECT AND VICTIMS KNEW EACH OTHER.
Employees at the convenience store on James Smith First Nation who answered the telephone Monday afternoon described the mood of community members as sombre and quiet.
The community is located about 60 kilometres east of Prince Albert.
Several detachments in the surrounding area as well as Saskatoon Police Service Air 1 helped in the search for Moostoos and an emergency alert was issued warning residents to stay inside. That alert has since been lifted, RCMP said in a news release, as a result of information investigators learned, including the fact the suspect and victims knew each other and the time that has passed since the initial incident.
The RCMP said it’s encouraging the public to continue to be vigilant.
As the investigation is ongoing, residents in the area can expect to see an increased police presence. The RCMP is asking that residents respect police barricades that have been erected in the area.
Moostoos may be driving a 2003, white Pontiac Montana, with Saskatchewan licence plate 938 MBT. Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Shawn Moostoos is asked to
call 911 immediately.
