Urban to the core

‘MODERN INDUSTRIAL’ IS THE WATCHWORD AT PETER & ADELAIDE PROJECT BY LISA VAN DE VEN

-

“Definitely an urban, downtown purchaser.” That’s interior designer Kelly Cray’s take on the demographic coming to the Toronto condominium project Peter & Adelaide. Which is why the principal with U31 wanted to introduce a sense of downtown into the sales centre and model vignettes as well. “Much like the personalities in a condo are all different,” Cray says, every tile is unique in a signature floor he introduced in the sales centre, while he describes the bathroom vignette as “tactile” and “textural.” There, rustically styled cabinetry is juxtaposed against sleeker Caesarstone. The kitchen continues the urban esthetic, with black and wood-grain cabinetry, alongside wide-plank laminate flooring. “It’s a modern industrial flavour,” Cray adds. Suites at the Graywood Developments site range from 380 to 1,100 square feet and start in the $300,000s. The sales office is located at 102 Peter St., Toronto, and open by appointment. Call 416-829-4200 or visit peterandadelaide.com. 1 To keep the kitchen vignette compact, Cray introduced European-sized appliances, including the smaller 24-inch stainless steel microwave and oven. The fridge and dishwasher are kept hidden, integrated behind cabinet fronts. “Spaces are getting smaller and smaller, and the kitchen becomes a furniture piece,” Cray says. 2 “We liked the idea of it being very clean,” the designer says of the kitchen vignette’s wood-grain cabinetry. He achieved those clean lines by removing any hardware, instead featuring recessed pulls and black accents around the edges. The graining, meanwhile, “adds more verticality” to the space. 3 “It has very little sheen, but the way the light hits it, it looks almost like suede,” Cray says of these black upper accent cabinets. “Black is very popular right now, not only in design but in fashion. It’s like the leather jacket of dressing up the kitchen.” 4 A taupe Caesarstone countertop and matching backsplash offer just a hint of visual texture, with veining that mimics the look of natural stone. Accessories, meanwhile, create a lived-in look, including cookbooks, bottles and a cactus in the corner — while a bright red kettle adds a pop of colour.
