Provincial indoor titles for three Bulldogs

-

Three Medicine Hat athletes won events at the Alberta Indoor Track and Field Championships last weekend in Edmonton, but it’s hard not to note one that stood out.

Lewis Benoy of the Bulldogs Track Club won high jump and triple jump and was third in long jump at the prestigious meet, which bodes well for the outdoor campaign this summer.

The 16-year-old cleared 1.95 metres to win the under-18 high jump, measured a 13.05 metre triple jump and soared 5.98 metres in long jump. Combined with a semifinal result in the 60 metre dash, he took top spot in his age group’s aggregate as well.

A total of 13 Bulldogs were at the competition, ranging from nine-year-old Madison Pullman to 46-year-old Shane Ryan. Ryan actually won masters shot put with a throw of 7.77 metres, though he was the only competitor.

The other provincial champ was Sarah Mickey, who won women’s para shot put with a 5.40 metre throw from her wheelchair. There was one other athlete in her division, which was the first time para athletes competed at indoor provincials.

Bulldogs Reece and Gage Reinhart were the other Hatters to reach the podium. Reece was second in under-18 boys shot put and weight throw, while Gage took third in under-18 60 metre hurdles.

Madison Kane-Rissling was fifth in under-18 girls triple jump and sixth in long jump, Jane Canadine was eighth in under18 girls 600 metre, and Quinn Halldorson was fifth in under-20 men’s 3,000 metre.
