Fundraiser to help replace stolen guitars

- Melissa Villeneuve LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Lethbridge Girls Rock Camp is getting help from a local rock band to raise funds after many of their guitars were stolen earlier this month. The LGRC “Gear Up” fundraiser with The Chevelles is planned for Friday at 9 p.m. at Average Joe’s Sports Bar.

LGRC is a local non-profit organization whose mission is to empower young girls through music. A significant portion of their guitars and basses were stolen from their storage facility over the Labour Day long weekend.

Seven guitars and two basses were stolen and there was no insurance to cover the loss. Some of the guitars are more unique pieces that could be hard to replace, including a three-quarter scale which was perfect for younger campers and a lefty guitar for lefthanded campers.

Guitars stolen include: Squire Start (red); Nova (red sunburst); Squire Telecaster (orange); Indiana Telecaster (black); Austin (pink, three-quarter scale); and Renegade (black, lefty). Basses stolen include a Jay Turser (green) and a Squire Jaguar (red).

The LGRC notified police and local pawn shops to be on the alert. They also posted about the theft on their Facebook page, which has been shared widely throughout Alberta.

For the past five years, LGRC has held weeklong summer day camps for girls ages eight to 17. Participants of all abilities can learn a new instrument, new techniques, and express themselves creatively in a safe and welcoming environment. They learn from strong female role models who instruct the girls and help them build self-esteem.

This fundraiser is intended to help them “gear up” in order to continue to offer these camps.

All proceeds from presale tickets to the concert will benefit LGRC. Tickets are available for purchase in advance for $10 at Blueprint Entertainment (519 4 Ave S).

If anyone has information on the theft, please contact police at 403-328-4444. To contribute toward future camps or equipment, visit
