Western back in win column

The power play was powerful Saturday for the Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals.

The Caps went 4-for-6 with the man advantage to defeat the Fredericto­n Red Wings 7-3 in Maritime Junior Hockey League action in the New Brunswick capital.

Kallum Muirhead had two goals and two assists to pace the Caps’ attack while Bennett MacArthur had two goal and an assist. Captain Brodie MacArthur had a goal and two assists while Jacob Arsenault had three helpers.

Brodie MacMillan and MarcAndre LeCouffe also scored in the road win. LeCouffe and Ed McNeill each added an assist in the victory.

Patterson and Ethan Stuckless scored for Fredericto­n.

Alec MacVicar stopped 26 shots in the win while Stratford’s Erik MacInnis made 26 stops in the loss.

Summerside held 3-1 and 5-3 period leads.

The Capitals, the seventhran­ked team in the Canadian Junior Hockey League, improve to 22-3-0-1 while the Red Wings are 13-10-1-0.

The Red Wings won the last meeting, 5-4 in a shootout on Nov. 30. Summerside completed the weekend road trip in New Brunswick Sunday in Edmundston against the Blizzard (15-61-2). The Caps travel to New Glasgow, N.S., Thursday to play the Pictou County Weeks Crushers at 7 p.m.

The Western Regals snapped a losing skid and began a win streak this weekend.

The Regals, who had lost five straight games, started December with a 7-6 victory Friday over the Prince Edward Island Midget AAA Hockey Leaguelead­ing Robin’s Mid-Isle Matrix 7-6 and capped off the weekend by blanking the Pownal Taco Boyz Red Devils 6-0 Saturday.

WESTERN 7, MID-ISLE 6

Michael McRae’s power-play goal with 27 seconds remaining was the winner Friday.

The Regals held 3-1 and 4-3 period leads in a see-saw contest at the APM Centre in Cornwall. The Matrix scored three goals in about three minutes to take a 6-4 lead midway through the third period.

Sam Hackett brought the Regals back within one with 8:38 remaining and Ethan Reilly tied it with 1:56 to play.

Reilly led the Regals with three goals and an assist while Hackett had a goal and two helpers and Kalim DesRoches scored one and set up another. Colby Baker had Western’s other goal while single assists were awarded to Alex Arthur, Cole Hemphill, Rankin Noye, Connor Ellsworth and Kennedy Gallant. Carson MacKay had two goals and two assists for the Matrix while Landon Hardy had a goal and two helpers.

Reese Wyand, Aaron McCloskey and Angus Beaton also scored for the home side. Matthew Mills had two assists while singles went to Wyand, Luke Payne, Joe MacEachern and Campbell Mayne.

Turner Ellis earned the win while Noah Visser took the loss.

Western went 1-for-2 on the power play while Mid-Isle was 1-for-3.

WESTERN 6, POWNAL 0

Nylan Hustler earned the shutout and an assist Saturday for the Regals. DesRoches and McRae each had a goal and an assist for the Regals at the Jacques Cartier Arena in Alberton while Reilly, Baker, Hemphill and Brett Ballum also scored.

Sam Hackett, Carson Wood, Cody McCormick and Jack Reilly each had a helper. Logan Birt took the loss. After a scoreless first period, Western took a 3-0 lead to the third. Pownal was 0-for-6 on the power play while Western did not have a chance with the man advantage as the Red Devils didn't take a penalty.

The Regals improved to 8-62, one point back of the leaguelead­ing Matrix (8-3-3) while the Red Devils are 7-7-1.

The Matrix played the Kings County Kings (0-9-3) Sunday evening.
