Chiheb, Hardy pick up PEISA awards

-

Briar Roberts of Newton was recently recognized as the P.E.I. Soccer Association’s senior female athlete of the year.

The association recognized its top performers for the 2016 season in Charlottetown recently. Roberts, a graduate of Kinkora Regional High School (KRHS), played a key role in the Holland Hurricanes winning the Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association (ACAA) championship. She scored numerous times throughout the year while helping set up a number of other goals for her teammates. Holland College standout Ibrahima Sanoh was named the senior male athlete of the year following another season, where his goals helped propel the Hurricanes to an ACAA title.

Junior athletes of the year

Maddy Hurley and Colin Curran were named junior athletes of the year.

Hurley’s big goals played a big role in the Winsloe/Charlottetown Royals winning the provincial under-16 championship. Recognized as one of the top players for her age in the region, Hurley was identified for the Vancouver Whitecaps’ identification camp.

Curran, who was also invited to participate at the Whitecaps’ identification camp, is another considered to be one of the finest in the region. He shows sound technical ability in his position of either centremidfield or wing-back.

Team

The RC United under-14 girls were named team of the year following a season where, despite adversity in losing key players at crucial times, they won a provincial championship and were great ambassadors for the province at the national club championships.

The coaching honour went to Hillsborough United’s Andrew Bartlett, who also led his under-14 boys to a provincial title, following a season where they finished in first place in the regular season with just one loss.

Officials

The official-of-the-year awards went to Aziz Chiheb, who has been extremely consistent and without doubt one of the best referees in Prince County, and Hailey Terstege, who has shown tremendous improvement in a short space of time and whose confidence and knowledge of the game has grown considerably.

Administrator

Mark Victor was named administrator of the year for the fine work he has done as the president of the Winsloe/Charlottetown Royals.

The Alan Godfrey Volunteer of the Year Award was given jointly to Courtney and Chelsey Gunn for the outstanding work they have done both coaching and working behind the scenes at the Stratford Soccer Club.

The prestigious Lowell Stewart Memorial Award, given to a young player who is active not just in soccer, but also in volunteering and the community, was presented jointly to Hannah Hardy of the Summerside United and Thomas CarterThompson from Stratford. Hardy and Carter-Thompson are described as fine young individuals, who give back to their respective clubs by coaching, officiating and helping wherever they are needed.

Hardy has assisted with the United club coaching the under-10 girls. She shows great responsibility in practising and developing the skills of the players. She also volunteers at tournaments, assists at registrations and is also an up-and-coming referee.
