Safety first
RCMP issues safety tips for trick-or-treaters
The RCMP in Prince Edward Island have issued some safety tips in hopes of keeping Halloween festivities fun and safe for everyone. The police force issued points for the travelling public, for children and teens who will be on the go on Halloween and for parents. “Adults should remind their children to play safe on Halloween and go over a few simple safety tips before all the excitement and sugar kicks in,” suggested Sgt. Leanne Butler, media relations officer with P.E.I. RCMP.
Butler urged all drivers, from recently licensed to seasoned motorists, to drive with care.
“It gets dark early and the kids are excited to make the rounds for their treats, so we’d like to offer a few suggestions to pass on to everyone planning to be out and about on the 31st.” As for costuming, police suggest wearing light or brightly coloured costumes and to incorporate reflective tape or armbands to enhance visibility. They also recommend wearing costumes that fit properly to reduce the chances of tripping, and that don’t restrict visibility. The RCMP urged trick-ortreaters to start and finish their rounds early, and that they be accompanied by an adult or responsible family member or friend.
Trick-or-treaters are reminded to advise their parents where they will be and for how long, to stay in their own neighbourhood and to know where there is a safe house. They were cautioned against going to homes that do not have lights on. The RCMP also reminded trick-or-treaters to stay on sidewalks, to respect people’s property and to avoid running across people’s lawns and gardens.
