Brown makes unusual statement in House
CHARLOTTETOWN — Charlottetown-victoria Park MLA Richard Brown made an unusual statement in the House Wednesday that fueled recent speculation he may be considering leaving the Liberal caucus.
During the ‘ statements by members’ portion of the legislative orders of the day Wednesday, Brown stood and began speaking about the importance of debate and the airing of opinions in politics.
It was an unusual speech, as statements by members consist mainly of congratulations to local sports teams and community groups on recent achievements.
But Brown used this time to stress the importance of MLAS having the freedom to express their ideas and to respect the thoughts put forward by others.
“I’ve always expressed my opinions and the opinions of the people I represent. I’m not always able to get my way or have people agree, but that has never stopped me from moving forward with other ideas,” Brown said.
“It is important we bring ideas for change forward and debate them. And a little note, I’ve always found the best ideas are not of the mind, but of the heart.”
This statement sent political watchers abuzz Wednesday, as there has been speculation swirling Brown may be considering leaving the Liberal caucus.
Brown has been uncharacteristically quiet since being placed on the backbench after sitting in cabinet for four years and in Opposition for several years prior.
Brown denied any notion he is crossing the floor or becoming an independent, but did make a joke that left the question in the air.
“I’ll send out a press release when I do,” he joked to reporters.
