Competitive compacts get 2016 model refresh

- NICK TRAGIANIS Driving.ca

What’s not to love about compact cars? They’re practical, good on gas and — more often than not — fun to drive. Here are the compacts you shouldn’t miss at the Edmonton Motorshow:

CHEVROLET CRUZE

The new 2016 Cruze is a larger and lighter, more efficient and more sophisticated reworking of Chevrolet’s best-selling global car. It will be offered in more than 40 markets around the world and is on sale in Canada now.

This Cruze is 68 millimetres longer and nearly 25 mm shorter in height than the 2015 model, giving it a longer and leaner appearance. A faster windshield rake and a faster-sloping rear profile lend a sportier look.

The 2016 Cruze is powered by a new standard 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that features both direct injection and stop/start technology. It’s matched with a standard six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

HONDA CIVIC

The all-new Civic has been completely re-engineered for 2016, marking the 10th generation of the best-selling model. It is arguably Honda’s sportiest Civic yet. The new look features shorter overhangs, a fastback-like silhouette and a more aggressive front fascia and the new Civic will also include Honda Sensing safety and driver-assistive technology.

In the base LX and mid-range EX, power comes from a normally aspirated 2.0-L four-cylinder engine. It can be paired with either a six-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission.

The 2016 Civic Sedan went on sale last fall, followed by the Coupe. Not returning for 2016 is the Civic Hybrid model.

NISSAN SENTRA

The Nissan Sentra is significantly refreshed for 2016. As the eighthgeneration model, the Sentra receives sharper styling all around, including new front and rear fascias, LED headlights on top-spec trim levels, and restyled wheels.

Power comes from a 1.8-L fourcylinder engine, good for 130 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque. It can be paired to either a six-speed manual or a continuously variable automatic transmission.

SCION IM

The new 2016 iM compact-sized hatchback arrives in a generously equipped mono-spec configuration. A 137-h.p. 1.8-L four-cylinder engine is paired with a choice of a six-speed manual or a sport-tuned continuously variable transmission with seven stepped shift points. The five-seat iM comes with a full-body aerodynamics kit, rear spoiler and sporty 17-inch alloy wheels with low-profile tires.

Standard features include a 4.2inch full-colour multi-information display, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, dual-zone climate control, front sport seats, power folding and adjustable heated exterior mirrors.
