What You Get... In McKernan
ABOUT MCKERNAN
Named after businessman James McKernan, the neighbourhood of McKernan was part of the city of Strathcona until it was amalgamated in 1912. At that time, the area was undeveloped. It consisted of large swaths of farmland and the 30-acre McKernan Lake, a popular picnic and boating site in the summer and skating lake in the winter. This changed when the lake was drained in the 1940s. Like many neighbourhoods developed after the Second World War, McKernan was initially filled with single-family dwellings. Walk-up apartments began to appear between the 1950s and 1970s. Today, McKernan is a mature neighbourhood with streets canopied by large, leafy trees. It is a popular area for renters, possibly because of its proximity to the University of Alberta. Today, homes in the area are predominantly a mix of singlefamily dwellings and duplexes.
