Mother finale a watershed?

- ALEX STRACHAN

Can Barney ever settle down? And even if he were to settle down, would it be with Robin? On such life-anddeath questions TV sitcoms turn. How I Met Your Mother ends its eighth season with Something New, a followup to last week’s Something Old, in which serial womanizer and self-styled ladies’ man Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) prepares to tie the knot with Canadian former pop-star and present-day cable-news anchor Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders).

Robin, a young woman given to wearing Vancouver Canucks replica jerseys who has admitted a past attraction to men with cuts and scars, especially those from sports and fights, seems an odd fit for How I Met Your Mother’s most unapologetic hound dog.

Something New was written by Mother co-creators and executive producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, so that suggests something major is about to happen. If it does, it may well prove to be a watershed moment in a series that, being on the air eight years, has a finite amount of time left. Parent network CBS has already renewed Mother for a ninth season, but anything beyond that is anyone’s guess. (CBS, Citytv — 9 p.m.)

Castle ends its fifth season with Beckett (Stana Katic) re-examining what she wants from her job, and her relationship with Castle (Nathan Fillion), after she interviews for a job. (CTV — 8 p.m., ABC — 11 p.m.)

2 Broke Girls ends its season with Max (Kat Dennings) and Caroline (Beth Behrs) making a discovery that could revive their dreams of a cupcake shop. (CBS, Citytv — 10 p.m.)

J.J. Abrams sits down with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show, to discuss Star Trek Into Darkness and his new Star Wars project, among other things. (CTV — 12:05 a.m.)
