Ring in new year at home

- LINDSEY WARD

Going out on New Year’s Eve is highly overrated. So for those inclined to stay home, here’s a rundown of this year’s televised shindigs.

Dick Clark’s Primetime New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2013: This will be the first year the American Idol host fills the iconic television personality’s shoes entirely. Clark died at the age of 82 on April 18 from a heart attack, and a two-hour celebration honouring him kicks off festivities earlier. Taylor Swift, Canada’s own Carly Rae Jepsen and Neon Trees are in line for the New York City bash. (ABC — 9 p.m.)

Citytv’s New Year’s Bash: East and west also meet on the 28th-annual bash, which broadcasts live on location from Toronto, Calgary and Edmonton. Johnny Reid, The Tenors, Kardinal Offishall, Jully Black and Massari are among the performers. (Citytv — 8 and 10:15 p.m.)

New Year’s Eve With Carson Daly: The Voice host’s holiday perennial features an hour’s worth of song and dance before the big ball drop. (NBC — 11 p.m.)

MTV’s Club NYE 2013: Jersey heads to New York in MTV’s annual blowout featuring Jersey Shore’s Nicole (Snooki) Polizzi and Jenni (JWoww) Farley and comedian Jeff Dye as hosts. (MTV Canada — 9 p.m.)

New Year’s Eve Live! Haven’t seen Phillip Phillips since May? Neither have we. This year’s American Idol winner will be partying with Fox on the Las Vegas strip, and you’re all invited. (Fox — midnight)

New Year’s Eve at Niagara Falls: Nelly Furtado, Hedley and Dragonette join hosts Cheryl Hickey and Matte Babel at Entertainment Tonight Canada’s fête, which includes coverage from coast to coast. (Global — 10 p.m.)

CBC’s lineup starts with a replay of the This Hour Has 22 Minutes holiday special, followed by the Royal Canadian Air Farce’s and funnyman Ron James’ annual show. (CBC — 7 p.m.)
