NUGENT, Joseph ‘Joe’ Stephen

The family of Joseph Stephen Nugent (born May 8, 1942) is sad to announce the passing of their father, grandfathe­r and brother at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on August 5, 2018, after a lengthy illness. Born in New Waterford to Peter Joseph and Stella (Horyl) Nugent, Joe enjoyed his childhood helping around the general store and meat processing business of his grandfathe­r (Horyl).

Educated at St. Francis Xavier University, Joe went on to a teaching career of more than 30 years at Mount Carmel, Riverview and Sydney Academy.

He is survived by sons, Robert (Ottawa), Donald (Carrie) of Hong Kong, Michael, Alberta, and their mother, Rachelle (Aucoin) Nugent, Sydney. He is also survived by sons, Ryan and Glenn, both of Sydney, and was predecease­d by his wife, and their mother, Marie (Gerrior, Martell) Nugent.

Joe will be missed by brothers, Frank (Mildred) of Sydney, Peter (Dorothy) of Moncton and Carl (Ruby) of Halifax, and by sisters, Patricia Wadden (Stan) of Dartmouth, Janice, River Ryan and Cheryl Livingston­e, Sydney.

He was predecease­d by his parents; sister, Carol Ann in her youth, and by a brother in infancy.

He is also survived by grandchild­ren, Olive, Ottawa, Rosa and Gia, both of Sydney, and was predecease­d by his beloved grandson, Vincent, whose loss broke Joe’s heart.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, especially those of the Cape Breton Cancer Centre and the An Cala Palliative Care Unit, for their profession­alism and unforgetta­ble kindness during Joe’s illness. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, August 8, from 6-9 p.m., in the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. A memorial service will be held the following day, Thursday, August 9 at 11:30 a.m., in the funeral home chapel with Fr. Ray Huntley officiatin­g.
