Sydney

-

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Barshill Erwin Lyons, 87, of 65 Churchill Dr., Sydney (formerly of Hills Road, Albert Bridge), in the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Sunday, April 1, 2018.

Born March 8, 1931, in Glace Bay, he was the son the late George and Barbara (Matheson) Lyons.

Barshill was an incredibly kind-hearted husband and father, someone who touched the lives of so many people. Barshill spent many years as a school bus driver but he was best known for his expert gardening and farming skills. Barshill was a long-time member of Westminster Bible Presbyterian Church in Sydney. He was close to his recently ‘adopted’ family at Williston House, where he was always willing to offer a helping hand.

Barshill is survived by his sons, David and Stephen, and brother, Marty.

He was predeceased by his dearly loved wife, Yvonne, and his sisters, Mable, Faye, Claudine (Lovey) and Margaret.

A special thank you is extended to Dr. Myatt, our longtime family physician for his attentiveness and professionalism. Also special thanks to Winnie Boutilier and Les McLean for all they have done in recent weeks.

Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Westminster Bible Presbyterian Church on Thursday at 2 p.m., with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating. Following the service there will be a luncheon in the church basement. Interment will take place in Oakfield Cemetery, Hillside Road, Mira following the luncheon.

Memorials may be made to the An Cala Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or to the Canadian Cancer Society.
