It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Joseph Witzell at the Harboursto­ne Enhanced Care facility on October 1, 2017.

Born April 25, 1927 in St. Rose, NB, Michael was the son of the late Joseph and Elisabeth (Gauvin) Witzell, and resided in Sydney River for many years.

A skilled carpenter, Michael was employed as the Maintenanc­e Supervisor at the MacGilliva­ry Guest home for many years. He was a founding member of the Sydney River Fire Department, serving for over 50 years. Michael was an avid sports fisherman and enjoyed countless hours driving around the island in his customized Chevy van with his beloved Lucille, in search of the perfect fishing hole. He enjoyed travelling and visited many countries throughout the world.

Michael will be dearly missed by daughters, Estelle (Manfred) Ditzel, Sydney River, Maureen (Duncan) MacIsaac, Hantsport NS, Bernadette (Loredano) Zanardi, Vaughan ON, Wanda Ashley, Berwick NS; sons, David (Wendy), Sydney River, Gerard (Louise), Wagmatcook; daughter-in-law, Anne-Marie Witzell, Sydney; sister-in-law, Regina Witzell, St. Rose NB; 15 grandchild­ren; 18 great-grandchild­ren and many nieces and nephews.

He was predecease­d by his loving wife of over 60 years, Lucille Mary (Samson) Witzell; son, Raymond; son-in-law, Perry Ashley; sister, Elizabeth Boudreau; brothers, Claude, Alfred, Joseph, David and Walter.

Cremation has taken place and visitation will be held at the TW Curry Parkview Chapel on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River at 11 a.m., on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017, with Fr. Bill Burke officiatin­g. A private family committal will follow at the parish cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sydney River Fire Department or Palliative Care.
