They say variety is the spice of life. Does that make variety shows the spice of entertainment? It’s certainly a great way to see different performers at one venue, and sometimes means a discovery of unexpected talent, so I think it’s safe to say yes to that question.

On Monday night, you can decide for yourselves by attending Memorial Composite High School’s Christmas Daddies Variety Show. For a $5 ticket, you can listen to performances by Mike Mombourquette, Drew Rahey, Brooke Dawson, Erin King, Fernando Tancredi, Bryce Kehoe, Noah Reashore and many more. Some of these students have competed in the Next Big Thing, so we already know how good they are; others will surprise us. Snacks and refreshments will be available and donations will be accepted. All proceeds will go to Christmas Daddies telethon, which is coming up on Dec. 2.

The first Christmas fair at the Cape Breton Federation of Agriculture on Regent Street in North Sydney is also set for Dec. 2. Fair organizer Maureen Murphy said its name, The Best to You, is based on the Cape Breton tradition of giving our best to family, friends and even strangers. Lots of great crafts, music and food will really put you in the Christmas spirit.

Santa will arrive at 2 p.m. to collect letters from the children, and a coloring table will keep the little ones busy while the adults shop.

Taylor Burton, a wonderfully talented young man, will perform from 1-4 p.m., and chef James Rogers from the Waterside Restaurant will be on hand from 12-2 p.m. with tasty appetizers, like Japanese shrimp avocado and crab crescent wontons. Sounds good! Jennifer Brown will demonstrate cookie-decorating throughout the afternoon.

Admission is $2. The fair will be held from 12-4 p.m., so even if you can’t stay all day drop in at some point to see what’s happening. *** If you haven’t already had a flu shot, you can get it at the North Sydney Pensioners Club on Tuesday, from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m..

The Thrift Shop has a bag day scheduled for Nov. 28.. Fill a bag with clothes for $10. It’s a great way to outfit the family for the cold days ahead.

Young and old are invited to a magic show on Dec. 1 at 3 p.m. at the North Sydney Library. Rob the Magic Guy will perform some amazing tricks.

Another event worth supporting is the benefit dance at Rollies on Dec. 15. Caelin Romeo wants her sight back, and with your help she can purchase the eyewear that will give it to her. The $10,000price tag is overwhelming for a college student, but as we know every little bit counts. Cape Bretoners are known to pull through for each other, so this fundraiser will be a big boost towards Caelin’s dream of seeing again, and you can have a great time at Rollies while helping her.

Everyone out there keep your fingers crossed. It must be the reason we’re having such good weather this year. Take Care
