The Crown has consented to the release of a suspect charged in connection to a double murder in Calgary’s Sandstone community.

Defence lawyer Kaysi Fagan appeared before Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Dave Labrenz on Friday to have him sign off on the consent release of Dennis Wong.

Fagan and Crown prosecutor Doug Taylor agreed Wong could be freed on bail pending trial with a $35,000 surety being posted.

Wong is also subject to 24-hour house arrest with some exceptions.

Wong was charged Aug. 31 in connection with a fatal shooting in the city’s northwest three days earlier, in which two men were killed and a third wounded.

He faces allegations of accessory after the fact to the murders of Abas Ahmed Ibrahim, 27, and 19-year-old Mohamed Khalid Shaikh, as well as a charge of attempted murder.

Police were called to the 200 block of Sandarac Place N.W. for reports of shots fired around 8:40 p.m. on Aug. 28.

When officers arrived they found the two men dead inside a vehicle. A third victim was transported to hospital with gunshot wounds.

Investigators believe it was a targeted shooting and, according to homicide Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta, Wong, 20, was known to police.

The killings are believed to be related to organized crime.

On Sept. 5, police arrested a second suspect in the double fatality.

Gerald David Benn, 23, of Calgary, faces two counts of second-degree murder and one of attempted murder. He’s due back in court on Sept. 21, and remains in custody.

Wong returns to provincial court Monday.
