DESIGNED WITH FAMILY IN MIND

McKinney townhome in Legacy offers a bright floor plan and fenced-in backyard

- JOSH SKAPIN

With qualities such as its double car garage, yard, and welcoming gathering spaces, the McKinney is in step with what many young families look for in a home.

This 1,359-square-foot model is presented as a show home at a townhome development by Stepper Homes in the southeast Calgary community of Legacy. It’s fee-simple, which means the buyer owns and is responsible for the exterior of the home and the land it sits on, so there’s no need for a condo board or condo fees.

The buyer can enjoy a landscaped front yard and fenced backyard of their own. It’s easy to imagine parents and their children on a warm summer afternoon, splashing in a water table or playing with the family dog.

Behind the townhome — which has three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms — is a detached double car garage, allowing families with two vehicles to shelter them both. Any unused space can come in handy as additional storage.

Inside, the townhouse’s frontfacing great room provides an attractive, well-lit area in which to sit and connect. It’s 11 feet 10 inches by 14 feet nine inches, and has three tall windows that pull in large doses of sunshine. The adjacent front door with a glass insert and transom window above also contribute to the home’s distribution of natural light.

In many families, the kitchen is a multi-purpose hub, and this one is designed to accommodate that versatility. The central kitchen is open-concept, putting all of its features along one wall. There’s generous space between the island — which has a sink and extended eating bar with space for three people — and the wall, creating a smoother path for people to circulate, or gather and chat.

The kitchen also boasts stainless steel appliances, including an over-the-range microwave, and a spacious corner pantry.

As staged in the show home, across from the kitchen is space for a desk and chair. This demonstrates the ability for a child to work on their school assignment, while their parent is a few steps away preparing dinner.

Like the great room, the dining area also benefits from well-sized windows. In this case, they look into the backyard.

Stairs to the second level are accessed from the great room.

The master bedroom has windows that look over the front yard and measures 11 feet five inches by 11 feet. It’s accessorized with a walk-in closet off one way, and ensuite off another.

Both secondary bedrooms have a wall closet, are similar in size, and sit side-by-side.

Balancing the second level is a full bathroom, and laundry area with a stacked front-load washer and dryer. The laundry area is only a step or two from the secondary bedrooms, making it easy to carry a fresh load of clothes from the dryer to either of the children’s bedrooms.

Legacy is an award-winning community by WestCreek Developments with 15 kilometres of connected pathways, including parts that pass scenic ponds, and 121 hectares (300 acres) of eye-catching developer-protected environmental reserve. It also has a community garden, public art by Jane Seymour, and the convenience of existing bus stops throughout.
