GRAND SPACES
The Catalina impresses
Upscale finishes, grand entertaining spaces, generous bedrooms and ample natural light.
These characteristics help make the Catalina a catch for potential high-end home buyers in southeast Calgary.
The 2,919-square-foot model with three bedrooms and 2.5 bathroom model is displayed as a show home in Mahogany.
It has a three-car tandem garage.
Master-planned by Hopewell Residential, Mahogany boasts a 25.5 hectare freshwater lake, 30 hectares of naturalized wetlands and 22 kilometres in pathways.
The flex room in the Catalina is a gem. At nine foot six inches by 12 feet, the space makes sense as a formal dining room for hosting dinner parties with friends and family get-togethers over the holidays. It’s accessed through sliding double doors.
But as the name suggests, the space can work for an assortment of functions. In the show home, the flex room is staged for a Friday night game of cards.
The flex room wall facing the foyer is cut out and filled in with built-in floating shelves.
This creates a better flow of light, while being enclosed at the same time. On the back stretch of the main floor, the great room connects to the kitchen and dining area through an open-concept design.
While the gas fireplace is typically placed on one of the outward facing walls, this one takes a different approach.
It’s a two-dimensional box in the wall separating the great room from stairs to the second floor.
The wall, reaching the full height of the stairwell, is brick, giving the space a stylish, urban feel.
Next to the wall is a built-in unit with shelves and cabinets.
The great room and dining area are both well-lit with a series of tall windows that look into the backyard. This includes five in the great room and four more in the dining area.
The adjacent L-shaped kitchen benefits from this source of sunshine, as well. The cooking space contrasts bright cabinets, counters and a backsplash with dark wood on the body of the island.
Sitting under a row of pendant lighting, the island has a sink and extended eating bar that seats three people.
One of the most impressive elements of the kitchen is its substantial counter space.
This includes a stretch that runs from the dining area and wraps around to a wine fridge and pantry behind the kitchen.
There’s a Kitchen Aid gas range with a five-burner stainless steel cooktop, double stainless steel wall oven, and integrated fridge.
One the second floor, there’s a 16 foot-six-inch by 15 foot-eight-inch master bedroom and its accessories on one end and two side-byside secondary bedrooms on the other. A large bonus room, full bathroom, and laundry room are down the middle. The bonus room has enough space for large pieces of furniture and includes built-in shelving and cabinets.
Like the social spaces on the main floor, the master bedroom gets big window treatment, as well. Five of them pull in natural light from the rear-facing wall.
The home uses elegant arched doorways to access the ensuite and the walk-in closet within it.
The ensuite features his and her vanities and a luxurious freestanding tub.
Behind the wall where the tub sits, is a hidden shower with fullheight tile.
The closet connects to the laundry room, which has a front-load washer and dryer, built-in cabinets, counter space and a backsplash with tile carried over from the shower.
