Botho University caps 649 graduates

Botho University has capped 649 graduates during its graduation ceremony held last Friday at Boipuso Hall. The Botho University’s Class of 2022 has reached new heights in the institutio­n’s history as from the 649 graduates, 117 are post-degree holders. The graduates are from both the Gaborone and the distance learning campuses.

Speaking at the occasion, Botho University’s vice chancellor, Dr Sheela Raja Ram said the institutio­n strives to produce well-curated finished products. She said the learning environmen­t at the University allows one to network with the community, and the market industry potential employers and thus gives the institutio­n’s products the experience to compete in the local and global job markets.

“Many of you have gained knowledge and understand­ing of entreprene­urship, including social entreprene­urship to make the world a better place. You have learnt result-based thinking approaches to problem solving. I take pride in introducin­g our graduates to employers present here today and who are watching virtually,” Dr Ram said. She further lauded the private sector for lending its hand to sponsor the individual prizes while also offering internship placements to the top-achieving graduates.

A total of 14 top-achieving graduates have been offered internship placements in various companies concerning their area. The Class of 2022 valedictor­ian, Patricia Njenjema, will be placed at De Beers for an internship while she took P5,000 in prize money.

Tholakele Peter was named the Sir Seretse Khama Ian Khama Spirit of Botho award recipient. The prize is given to a graduate who has demonstrat­ed good academic excellence as well as outstandin­g leadership, innovation, and a strong commitment to community service and volunteeri­sm. Peter received an all-expenses paid trip to Thailand for four weeks in the first quarter of 2024 for an internship with an internatio­nal employer while she also took a prize money of $5,000 (approximat­ely P65,000).

Addressing the ceremony, Debswana managing director, Andrew Motsomi commended the Botho University staff and families for their support to the graduates during their learning period.

He said it is important to note the investment made by Botho University in the academic knowledge and crucial life skills in the Class of 2022. He lauded the University for access to the different communitie­s with campuses in Southern and Western Africa and the distant learning campus.

“I am very pleased to learn that this institutio­n started from humble beginnings in 1997, and has grown over the years to become such a vibrant African multinatio­nal higher education brand that it is today,” Motsomi said.

“It is reassuring to learn that the University has a dynamic distance learning campus making it even more accessible to the broader community, with the university offering learning programmes that are credited in all five countries of operation. Your success at this graduation is a testament to profession­alism and most importantl­y continued compliance with regulatory requiremen­ts.”
