One Dead, Two Seriously Injured In Separate Incidents
One person died while two others were seriously injured from two separate road mishaps that happened Saturday evening.
The first fatal accident occurred when a Toyota Wish collided with a Toyota Corolla at around 1900hrs in Metlojane.
Confirming the accident, Goodhope Police Station commander, Batshwari Gaobatlelwe said investigations into the matter were ongoing to establish what caused the accident.
“After receiving the accident report, police rushed to the scene, took both drivers to Princess Marina Hospital (PMH) after they were found in a critical state,” Gaobatlelwe said.
“However, on Sunday morning we received the sad news that the Toyota Corolla driver succumbed to the injuries.” Gaobatlelwe further stated that the Toyota Wish driver is still hospitalised and fighting for his life at PMH. The police officer said investigations have commenced to establish what transpired and who between the two drivers was at fault.
However, Gaobatlelwe stated that even though they were yet to conclude their investigations it looks like one of the drivers might have overlapped into the oncoming traffic lane resulting in the collision.
In another accident, a pedestrian was hit by a car not far from the head-on collision accident scene and sustained serious injuries.
“The unlicensed driver who hit the said pedestrian when trying to cross the road was driving from the head-on accident.
The investigations on the matter are (also) ongoing. The victim was also rushed to PMH where he is currently fighting for his life,” he said.
Gaobatlelwe pleaded with drivers to appreciate that pedestrians are equal road users.
He further implored members of the public to plan their journeys and avoid speeding off to beat the 2000hrs curfew, which is the restricted movement time.
“Drivers also have a tendency of overtaking at wrong places, drive with excessive speed and end up causing accidents when those with the ‘right-ofway’ are approaching.
Speeding is dangerous because should a mistake happen, innocent lives would be lost,” Gaobatlelwe said.
He added that some drivers like to go behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol, especially during month-end weekends.
